Economic Region Braunschweig - Wolfsburg

Tradition and high-tech are uniquely combined here. A region that offers both professional excellence and a high quality of life.

Goslar, a historic center of mining, has developed into a leading area in recycling. Valuable special metals, essential in smartphones, computers, and tablets, are reprocessed here. The district recognized early the potential in electronic waste and now offers exciting career opportunities for professionals in metallurgy, chemistry, and recycling. Salzgitter and Peine are significant locations for the metal and steel industry. In Salzgitter, five global players and numerous medium-sized companies drive a strong economy, offering countless educational and career paths. Wolfenbüttel impresses with its unique historic timber-framed architecture, while Helmstedt is transforming from a former lignite region to a high-tech hub for digital industries. Wolfsburg, with the Volkswagen Group, is a key player in the automotive market, and Gifhorn is home to numerous engineering service providers who, with creativity and foresight, are shaping the future.

In Braunschweig, Goslar, Salzgitter, Wolfenbüttel, and Wolfsburg, numerous universities, colleges, and institutes create a vibrant landscape for education, research, and innovation. Braunschweig, the second-largest city in Lower Saxony, has become the center of the most research-intensive region in Europe, thanks to its high concentration of research institutions. More scientists work here than anywhere else in Germany, giving the region a decisive competitive advantage.

The City of Gifhorn

The city of Gifhorn, which gives its name to the Gifhorn district, is the administrative center of the district as well as the location of the Gifhorn district court. It combines history and progress. The city, which originally developed around a castle, fascinates with its well-preserved old town and the impressive Gifhorn Castle. Gifhorn is also known for its International Windmill Museum, where traditional milling craftsmanship comes to life.

The pedestrian zone stands out with a variety of owner-operated specialty shops, inviting seating areas, and children's play options. A cinema, doctors, hairdressers, bank branches, and other service providers complete the offerings for basic and healthcare services. Even in the city center, nature is close by. The Aller River flows right through the pedestrian zone, creating a particularly welcoming atmosphere.

The city of Wittingen

The first known documentary mention of Wittingen dates back to the year 781. The town was a trading and resting place for trade in the east-west direction. Today, the city, located in the northern part of the district, harmoniously combines rural charm, historic half-timbered houses, and industrial strength. While the city center particularly invites visitors to linger in owner-operated specialty shops and cafés, the site's trimodal infrastructure provides ideal conditions for economic growth.
